How to turn tariffs into a selling opportunity

LEAF Shave

This is a video that we made for Leaf Shave to launch their brand-new bowl and brush set. It's still running on their account, and it's doing pretty well in the bottom to middle of the funnel.

The idea behind this video was to make something that stood out on the feed, present the products in the best possible way, and show how to use the new product.

I love the hook shot in this video. It's really funny. Thanks to Tiktok, more people are now watching videos on their phones with sound, so you need to make sure that you make that part of your overall creative, not just focus on the visuals.

We shot this all in our studio in a couple of hours. We actually built a bathroom set for this that allowed us to be super flexible in the shots we were able to get. You can see in the behind-the-scenes photo below that the set was only small, but when on camera, it looks great.

This is proper movie magic. We are very lucky to have the space we do and the talented team to pull this kind of thing off.

Although this video is a little bit scummy, given how hard the tariffs have hit some businesses, I think there is an essence of turning lemons into lemonade here.

It doesn't matter whether you understand business or not; everybody knows that tariffs will affect them somehow. So using them as a type of scarcity to help sell your product is actually pretty smart.

The best part of this creative is that it was probably super easy to make. The brand probably had a huge bank of footage that they could pull from. Overlay the caption, place a trending TikTok sound underneath, and launch.

This is the advice I give to every DTC brand I speak with. Build an extensive archive of great video footage that you can use to make endless creative.

I've been seeing this type of static ad all the time: a couple of paragraphs of text that feel like an honest conversation with your customer, using the creative to connect with them on a deeper level.

Often, these ads come with a headline that reads something like a message from our founder or a message to our customer. This helps hook people because they think they're about to find some hot gossip. But in this case, they're using the headline to call out their target customer and ensure that the people reading it are the people they want buying that product.

Again, this is an easy creative that you could probably do in the next hour or two. Write the copy yourself, send it to your design team, or pop it inside Canva and launch it. You could make this even faster by leveraging AI to write a copy.

If you really wanna take it to the next level, you could maybe even write something about how the company has been affected by tariffs and how right now is the perfect opportunity to purchase. Leveraging the message from the founder angle and the scarcity we discussed in the last creative.

TLDR:

  • Simple creative is often the most effective

  • Don't be scared to experiment with long pieces of copy.
